Bitter Sweet Times

It has been a wild week or so here at the Morlock Foundation.  Sukhi, who has been a tremendous asset for us is moving on.  She is heading to Toledo and med school.  Her knowledge of statics and medical conditions have proven to be invaluable to our cause.  Myself, I have accepted a full time position as a Legal Secretary.  Unfortunately however this is a day position so I will be unable to contribute as much as I have been.  I am optimistic that despite these challenges the Morlock Foundation will continue to grow and prosper.

New Volunteer-Malik

The Morlock Foundation is proud to introduce our newest volunteer.  Malik is a sixteen year old man who is completely blind.  Despite this he is exceptionally mature and extremely capable admin, thanks to a special machine with converts braille into text and text into braille.  We welcome Malik to our team.

Fun times....

Sometimes I love to volunteer here, I got to sit around and imagine all sorts of awesome ideas for our Gala baskets.  So basically I came up with things that I have enjoyed around WNY.  If you wish to join in the fun, please email me about how you like to spend your money to lead.admin.asst@morlockfoundation.  We are aiming to  have 100 baskets and I am hoping that they will be a big hit.

Excitement is abound.

It's been a while, but it's good to be blogging again.  It is an exciting time here at the Morlock Foundation.  Our grant request to the United Way has just been sent out, we are adding a new volunteer, Dan Warren to help run C.A.P.  In addition we are also stepping up our Ink Recycling efforts, we are working to establish a drop box for electronic equipment (smart phones, cell phones, laptops, laser cartridges etc )at our Buffalo office and across the street at the Parkside Community Association.  Feel free to bring your old electronic equipment to us and it will be put towards a good cause.  Lastly, if you or someone you know is looking to gain some experience working in an office and would like to work with the most awesome group of people on the face of the planet.  Give us a call at 842-1300, we could use a new admin to help manage our ink recycling program.

After Five months....

I am finally getting to the end of the admin handbook.  I just need another set of eyes, or two, or three to look it over and make sure it is clear and concise.  Not entirely done, but after I got to the point where I couldn't do any more today I felt like a great void.  Like something was wrong.  Apparently I was supposed to work on the handbook for ever.  Anyway now I will have an opportunity to knock off some of the projects posted on the white board.  By the way, typing without looking at a computer screen is weird.

Fair well Karen, best of luck

Today was a bittersweet day. It was our the last day of Karen's internship.  She brought a lot of energy and compassion to our group.  From where I was, I though she did a spectacular job, she will make a great Social Worker in the future.  I heard no complaints from anyone about Karen, and that ain't no lie.  Good luck.

Another day at the office

Hi everyone, we are starting a new fundraiser, tell your friends to go to www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/Carmie/textathon?fge=ask.  It's really simply, nothing fancy, and the staff member who bundles the most money gets an authentic autographed Angelia Jolie poster.  If everybody advertises on there facebook page and using texting.  We're do awesome.  Enjoy the beautiful weather.

Greetings everyone.  Sorry I've been busy as of late.  Been meaning to put in a blog when I get home, and I never have.  So I'll get one done at the office today.  First's things first, we would like to welcome our brand new admin Laurie to our team (Hurrah!!!!) Laurie will be working on Wednesday's from 10-2.  We also have a brand new Social Work admin Sooki (Yippie!!!)

In addition we are also working on a number of projects.  Deanna and Rebecca are starting up a 50/50 twitter raffle via twitter.  Expect that to go online next week.  Meanwhile Alicia, Karen, and Sooki are working on a new grant.  Wish them luck.

So TODAY, I'm going to talk about Google Apps

Hi everybody.  Just when I thought the Admin team was finally getting the workload under control we got bombarded with 100 more things to do.  It's taking some time to get Google Apps down, (especially when I can't remember what the password is) but I think we are making progress.  From now on all documents go to Google docs.  There is no more saving on the server.  If you want to find out more about Google docs you can check out my handy dandy Google Docs procedure.  It's on Google docs in the admin folder......don't worry, my goal is to get that procedural along with several others printed out and in the maroon folder soon, hopefully Wednesday.

I was going to talk about Google Apps today, and then Jay Leno called...

Yes, the Jay Leno.  He called to contribute to a client fundraiser.  He spoke directly to Trina and then to Carmie.  I didn't even know it happened until after he hung up.  I don't usually consider my self someone who is star struck.  But how awesome is it that the host of the Tonight Show would call and support our cause.  This place is still buzzing, or at least I am.

P.S we started to move all of our documents to Google Apps today.

Problem Statement

Good Evening, today was a really exciting day.  We hammered out a problem statement outlining how we perceive health care in this country.  We spent a good 2 hours talking about this.  The bad news, it's a mess, the good news.  We know we can help fix it.

Exciting Day

Hi, today was an AWESOME DAY.  I got to lead a meeting.  I think I did pretty well, considering I wasn't prepared at all.  It was nice to get the admin team on the same page.  In addition Alicia and Carmie also had a meeting with a major foundation about a loan which could lead to some big time local media exposure.  I'm bound my a vow to silence, but I can say it that it was a really helpful meeting.  And could lead for some really exciting opportunities.

Feeling like a supervisor

Hi everbody (hi Dr Nick)

Today I felt like a supervisor.  I talked a lot and didn't get much work done...I kid I kid.  Actually I was introduced to Google Apps, also known as the future of office.  Here we can store various documents, spreadsheets and all sorts of information.  I also finally got to meet one of my fellow admins, Trina.  She is a sweet young women.  We also set up an admin log and a new way to sort out our assignments which gives us more control over what we do.

The Nerd Herd

Greetings, today we were graced with the presence of the Oracle Charter School self titled Nerd Herd.  These kids know computers a lot better then any of us.  They came with their instructor Michael McKee and will be around regularly to help bring us into the 21st century.  My favorite part was the buzz created when they found computers from 1989, which makes that computer five years older then any of them.  I love the enthusiasm for cool stuff, but not so thrilled that said computer is still younger then I am.  They were all top notch human beings and it was encouraging to see younger people doing good (not that any of us are old fogies).  Brought me back to my time in High School.

Lone ranger

What's up.  Another day at the office, and this time I was all by self, and the building didn't burn down!  I got a couple of projects done, thanks to modern technology.  Apparently Carmie can print brochures on the TMF server, from outside the office.  And she can talk to me using microsoft word.  Very creepy watching word type a message to me.  Still fun, none the less.

It never ends!!!!

Hey everybody, James here.  I came in an hour later, man does that extra hour of sleep make a difference.  I actually felt like I knew what I was doing today!  Yippie!  Now it is time for me to master getting my work done faster.  I redid the board peer evaluations surveys hopefully it will work this time.  There is a lot to do but I'm optimistic that withe practice I'll get to where I need to be.

Getting settled

Second Friday at Morlock, getting out of bed after 4 hours of sleep is a pain.  I might start coming in at 1 instead of 12.  But once I got here I think I did well.  There is lots and lots and lots and lots to do here.  But it's exciting to see where we can go with a little bit of organization and a couple of completed projects.  I am of the mind that the best work is that which makes life easier down the road.  I expect a lot of my tasks will be like it that, it keeps me sane...don't laugh.  The work keeps piling up so I will be relying on my fellow admins, Ruby and Trina to help beat back the every growing pile of paperwork.  Maximizing their enjoyment and our efficiency will be key to our success.

First Day at the Office

Hi everybody, James here.  Today is my first day at the office, and boy is it exciting.  I was looking to volunteer as an administrative assistant as I don't have much experience in that field.  And here I am learning about MagicJack, Yahoo groups, fundraising, automated calls, QR codes, editing newsletters, writing blogs, answering phones, maintaining calendars, database uploading, and coordinating other administrative assistants efforts....I love it!!!!!

I'm really excited about where Morlock can go, the people here are really dedicated and have big plans.  Alicia is awesome and has been a great trainer and the free tea is awesome.  Personally I'm working, volunteering, and going to school, so I have a lot on my plate.  It's scary but like Morlock I'm excited about the possibilities.
